This book is my attempt to bring those tools into a single, coherent textbook for lecturers, teacher educators, and pre-service teachers who want to connect linguistic theory with English teaching practice in higher education contexts. It is written from the perspective of language educators who teach General English, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and teacher education courses, and who need linguistic knowledge that is immediately usable for lesson planning, materials development, assessment, and classroom research. The central assumption throughout is that we do not need “more rules”; we need clearer descriptions of how English actually works—structurally, semantically, pragmatically, and discursively—and concrete illustrations of how those descriptions can inform everyday pedagogical decisions.
